Principal's Message

Callahan

 Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to Lewis Middle School.  We work closely with all of our students as we prepare them for our expectations of high school and beyond!

Lewis Middle School was recently named eligible by our state superintendent as a California Distinguished School for our safe, challenging, and innovative learning environment. Lewis was also recently recognized by the California Business Association as an exemplary school for closing the achievement gap and exiting Program Improvement status as called out in “No Child Left Behind". We are located in the beautiful Allied Gardens/Del Cerro area in the heart of San Diego. Our mission is to prepare all students academically and socially for high school and beyond by providing a rigorous core curriculum that includes a broad range of electives. Lewis students and staff operate under the three guiding principles of hard work, mutual respect and safety. Whether it's our award winning band and orchestra, the arts, technology (including our engineering course) or the foreign language of Spanish, we aim to make our school a place that is academically rigorous and a fun place to be. Lewis's Academic Score (API) is above the state's goal of 800 and rose from a score of 804 in 2006 to a score of 881 in 2011.

One of Lewis Middle School’s outstanding features is our Library and MacLab where students are welcome to read, research, and use our computers.  Students may come to our Library/MacLab before and after school and during lunch.  All students new to Lewis will receive a Library/MacLab orientation

If you just moved to our neighborhood recently, you may enroll your children between 8 a.m. and noon, or make an appointment by calling 619-583-3233 extensions 2205 and 2230 (Spanish). List of enrollment requirements is posted in our website in the Attendance/Enrollment page..

Lewis always welcomes and needs your help in a variety of ways throughout the year.  At this time, parent volunteers are critically needed in the library and to assist in the main office. Please call the school office at (619)583-3233 extension 2219, if you would like to volunteer. Please also consider becoming a board member in our Foundation, in our SSC or in our SGT.

Students were issued textbooks during the first several weeks of school.  Students are required to cover their books.  Since the average cost of a textbook is over $50.00, students are responsible for all textbooks checked out to them. Students who lose textbooks must pay for them at the end of the school year. 6th grade students will also be issued their own laptops complete with 3G service to be carried between home and school, thanks to the LOGO program. More information to come!

Our vice principals, Mr. Brock and Mrs. Garcia, along with all of our wonderful staff look forward to another successful year together. Please visit our website ( www.lewis.edu ) regularly for more details and updated information.

Sincerely,

Brad
