Math

At Lewis Middle School we want all of our students to be confident in their ability to think mathematically. At each grade level we provide a range of instruction in order to meet students’ individual differences. While most students are in grade-level classes, some students are ready for an advanced or a grade-ahead math program. The purpose of this page is to describe the range of our programs and to identify the specific criteria used in determining how students are placed in the various advanced classes each year.

Grade-Level Math Classes: content and pace are geared for the general population.

Advanced Math Classes: serve the needs of our students who have potential to achieve at a higher level, but may need further skill development; students have demonstrated a commitment to working hard and completing tasks; students can expect more homework at this level.

Grade-Ahead Math Classes: an accelerated program for high achievers who are able to perform more independently and have demonstrated extraordinary task completion; students can expect more homework at this level.

Grade  Grade-Level Classes                              Advanced Classes                          Grade-Ahead Classes
6th           Math 6                                                                                                                       Advanced Pre-Algebra 6
7th       Pre-Algebra                                                                                                                            Advanced Algebra 1-2
8th    Algebra 1-2 or Algebra Readiness             Advanced Algebra 1-2                  Advanced Geometry 1-2

Placement into Advanced Math Classes:
Student placement in advanced math classes is based on a number of assessments, test scores, and teacher recommendations. Much effort goes into placing students in classes that both challenge and interest the individual learner. The following are used to determine appropriate placement:

  • California Standards Test (CST) score of Advanced
  • Score on the End of Course Exam
  • Semester/final grade of “A” or “B” in previous math course
  • Good study habits with clear evidence of task completion (assignments completed on time, attentiveness during class, Accelerated Math objectives  mastered)
  • Sophistication in problem-solving and abstract reasoning
  • Teacher recommendation (achievement in class particularly with enrichment and problem-solving activities)

For the students we recommend for this program, we want their best effort, and believe they can do it!

Placement Changes:There are occasions where a student’s placement is higher or lower than his or her actual ability and/or knowledge level. We want to find the best placement for each student as early and accurately as possible.  Student performance will be closely monitored. We believe an“achievement-based” system will better insure that students are placed in the appropriate class. Sixth grade students in the Advanced Pre-Algebra must maintain an A or a B at all times. If the grade is a C or below, the student may be placed in the Math 6 or will be required to take Pre-Algebra as a 7th grader.  Seventh grade students in the Advanced Algebra 1-2 must maintain an A or B at all times.  If the grade is a C or below, the student may repeat Advanced Algebra 1-2 or be placed in Algebra 1-2 as an 8th grader.

Our goal is for all students to accomplish as much as they are capable of without pushing them into situations they may not be intellectually ready for. All students should be given the opportunity to enhance their learning potential at a pace that is right for them.

Any questions about this policy can be referred to your student’s math teacher.
