About Kate Sessions School
Kate Sessions is a small neighborhood school serving northern Pacific Beach. Our learning community is a blend of local students, students who live in military housing, those who attend through enrollment options and Special Education students who choose our school because of its programs.
Our vision is to become a world-class school where we create learning experiences that foster student inquiry by promoting critical thinking, problem-solving and developing moral integrity to support decision making and actions based upon honesty, fairness, justice and respect.
We are an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. Our instructional program is an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. The state standards are the foundation of our curriculum. Teachers incorporate a global perspective, along with a real world application of concepts and skills.
Our Parent-Teacher Organization supports our academic program by funding a vocal music teacher, art teacher and a librarian. We offer Spanish language instruction for all grades kidnergarten through 5th grade and computer literacy classes for grades 3-5. Our GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) programs are infused with International Baccalaureate elements that bring the real world into the classroom.
The Kate Sessions school community works together to provide our students with a challenging and engaging learning environment that supports purposeful inquiry and builds positive attitudes towards learning. As the IB program at Kate Sessions Elementary continues to grow and develop, we are seeing tremendous academic improvements within our student population. Our student API scores have jumped from 827 to 931 in 8 years. That’s a growth of 104 points, is among the highest in the region.and the trend is still moving upwards. What is particularly encouraging about these improvements is that our teachers are not following a model that “teaches to the test.” Instead, our teachers focus on mastering IB teaching methodologies, which allows students to learn through a model of inquiry. In this paradigm, information is not merely memorized and quizzed for short-term knowledge, but rather it is absorbed into long-term understanding through exploration, hands-on experimentation, group discussions, and classroom projects.
Clearly, watching our students excel is very fulfilling and motivates us to continue to strengthen our program. As our students’ competencies improve, so does their self-confidence and self-esteem. Our teachers also become more enthusiastic and motivated, and a healthy sense of competition ensues as we try to meet or even surpass the achievements of nearby schools. While it is not our focus, it is exciting to know that “we’ve arrived” and are now in the mix of top schools in the area.
