Letter of Understanding

Dear Parents, MBHS Senior and Mentor:

 

According to San Diego Unified District Procedure No. 4770, high school diplomas are awarded to students who meet all general and course requirements for graduation, "including the presentation of a senior exhibition that meets school-site criteria." It is also a requirement for students who wish to participate in the Mission Bay Commencement Ceremony and other senior activities in June.

MBHS Parent/Guardian - It is your responsibility to review portfolio and exhibition requirements, suggested meeting dates and due dates as identified on the backside of this letter. It is your responsibility to follow your student's progress and provide the necessary support from home in order for them to successfully complete and pass the portfolio and exhibition. It is your responsibility to stay in communication with your student's mentor as it pertains to the portfolio and exhibition requirements.

MBHS Senior - It is your responsibility to meet with your mentor promptly at the date and time arranged between you and your mentor. It is your responsibility to complete and submit all portfolio and exhibition requirements on or before the dates identified. It is your responsibility to stay in communication with your mentor and parents throughout the entire portfolio and exhibition process.

MBHS Mentor - It is your responsibility to set up meeting dates and times, no later than the dates identified in the overview of requirements handout, with your MBHS Senior. It is your responsibility to stay in communication with your MBHS senior's parent/guardian. It is your responsibility to read all items of the portfolio, encourage students to correct their mistakes, provide the guidance/assistance necessary to correct those mistakes and provide feedback to your MBHS senior in a timely manner as it pertains to the portfolio and exhibition. Finally, it is your responsibility to notify your content area administrator and parent by March 25, 2011 if student is at risk of failing senior portfolio requirements.

MBHS Administration -It is your responsibility to provide clearly defined set of expectations for all involved in the senior portfolio and exhibition experience. It is your responsibility to provide updates, changes, and/or corrections, as they may arise, to parents, senior, and mentors involved in the senior portfolio and exhibition experience. It is your responsibility to provide support and/or counsel to members involved in the Senior Portfolio and Exhibition process when problems/concerns may arise.

BRIEF OVERVIEW OF REQUIREMENTS

1.       Autobiographical Essay: This two-page essay will introduce the student to panel members. 

2.       Resume

3.       Two Best Works:  Seniors will include two culminating pieces representing quality work in two different categories, collected over time if possible.  One best work must be in an academic area and the other can come from an elective class or school related activity.  Students will write a one page reflection (typed, double spaced) for each best work and then describe and defend in the exhibition.

4.       Personal Reflection on Academic Experience at High School:  This two-page (typed, double spaced) essay will reflect on student’s high school transcript and attendance record.

            OR

Community Service Hours:  20 hours of service must be documented with a Letter of Validation/Certificate of Service from the agency or activity supervisor. In addition, write a one page (typed, double spaced) reflection about this experience.

5.       Senior Exhibition Interview:  Students will participate in a 20 minute interview with a panel of MBHS staff members, parents, 11th grade students, and community partners.

§  Review overall portfolio expectations, requirements and timelines.

§  Begin working on Autobiographical Essay or Resume and Two Best Works.

§  Student and Mentor sign “Letter of Understanding”; Get parent signature and return to mentor.

§  Decide which one you will complete and begin working on:

Personal Reflection of Academic Experience or Community Service Volunteer Hours Log, Employer Letter of Validation/Certificate of Service to be completed and reflection. (If you choose Personal Reflection of Academic Experience pick up transcript and attendance records from Counseling Dept.)
