I.                  Blue Ribbon Celebration

On Tuesday, November 13, Mrs. James, Mr. Towler, Mr. Gutiérrez and Dr. García attended the Blue Ribbon Celebration in Washington D.C.  We accepted the award on behalf of our brilliant students, fantastic parents, and wonderfully devoted teachers and staff. We will be holding a celebration for our students and staff as well as a Blue Ribbon flag raising activity. Stay tuned for more information.

Click here to access pictures of the trip.

II.               Wang’s Fundraiser

Thanks to the support and generosity of I.S. parents, the San Diego High School Foundation raised about $18,000 in early November to help support I.S. students and programs. The fundraiser would not have been possible without the contributions of the planners (Connie Maginn, Stephanie Jennings, Carrie Lopez, CJ Lucke, Donna Garcia, Amy Villafranca, and others); of the parents who volunteered along the way, both before and during the auction; of the many parents who generously donated items to be offered at the auction; of the parents who bought the items at auction; and of Rocky Campbell, President of the Foundation. We hope to make the event bigger and better for next fall. - Greg Olmstead.

I.                  Fundraiser at Wang’s: Success!

The fundraising event to benefit the School of International Studies was very successful! Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers, organizers, and the San Diego Foundation for leading us in an event that focused on securing funds to support the IB program in our school. The night’s festivities were filled with an extremely palpable, positive energy! One word summarized the event: generosity! The selfless donors provided monetary contributions to directly and positively impact our program. I am truly humbled by each of our very generous donors! Thank you to Dr. Manuel and Mrs. Donna García for donating the painting below back to our school (after they had successfully outbid other parents). They indicated that the painting represents the spirit of our wonderful school! Whenever you find yourself in our office, come and enjoy the symbolic art!

Again, thank you to all participants for your generosity and for believing in our students and our school!

II.               A Note from World History Teacher: Ms. Kirilova

Project-based Learning

As the culminating project of the French Revolution unit, sophomores in Ms. Kirilova’s classes held a mock trial of Napoleon Bonaparte. The prosecution wanted to exile Napoleon to the island of St. Helena, while the defense wanted him to remain the leader of France. Attorneys examined and cross-examined witnesses, judges decided on objections and emotions were running high while students confidently used their knowledge of Enlightenment ideas, forms of government, Napoleonic wars, as well as social, political and economic factors in history.

III.              IS Parent Connect Meeting

Join us for our next IS Parent Connect Meeting to be held on Tuesday, November 13  in our PAT.  Lynn O'Shaunnesy,  a nationally published author of "The College Solution" will speak to us about preparing for college (9th grade and beyond).

IV.              ISA Scholarship Applications Available (From Mrs. Berman)

ISA Scholarship applications for IB testing fees are available online on the IS website under scholarships and at the link below.  Students receiving scholarship funds from an alternative source are not eligible to apply.  Note that the deadline for the application is November 23, 2012, as the IB registration fees are due at the end of this month and all applications must be reviewed by our I.S. V.                Trick or Treat…Thank you ISA!

Staff members and students at I.S. like their traditions, and celebrating Halloween has become a community favorite!  ISA organized a simple trick-or-treating activity that took place during the last 20 minutes of period 3B on Wednesday, October 31.  Participating teachers in the 800 building handed out healthy snacks and then the students gathered in the I.S. quad to enjoy the camaraderie.

II.               A Note from Theatre Teacher, Mr. Poncey:  Allegiance and The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet

On Thursday October 25, 75 students from M. Poncey's Theater classes were invited to a student matinee of the musical, Allegiance, at the Old Globe. Allegiance featured George Takei (of Star Trek fame) in the roles of Sam Kimura and Oji San who tell the story of the relocation into internment camps of Japanese Americans during World War II. It is a powerful story and one which closely narrates the experiences of George Takei as a child as he himself was sent with his family to Camp Rohwer in Arkansas. Drama students enjoyed the amazing acting and singing from cast members Lea Salonga (Kei Kimura), Allie Trimm (Hanna Campbell), Telly Leung ( Sammy Kimura) and others. Many felt the scenes of the loyalty questionnaire and the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima were some of the most poignant moments they had seen on a theater stage. M. Poncey and his classes are most thankful to the Old Globe for their partnership and free tickets. We would also like to extend our thanks to the Theater moms who helped chaperone and to our principal, Dr. Garcia, for attending.

On a different note, the cast members of " The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet" would like to inform our IS audiences that our show dates have been moved back to December 13, 14 and 15 to avoid clashing with December Nights in Balboa Park. In the past, parking and traffic have been difficult at best for our patrons and we are delighted to have been able to move back our show.

-M. Poncey

I.                  San Diego High School of International Studies Wins National Blue Ribbon Award! A Behind the Scenes Look….

Mrs. James narrates a ‘behind the scenes’ look into the process and teamwork required to complete the Blue Ribbon Application:

In addition to jumping up and down (I have been hitting the treadmill at home, therefore, more agile) to celebrate earning the coveted “Blue Ribbon” award, I would like to acknowledge and to thank my peers for providing insights and information about our accomplishments. Given your expertise, we were able to successfully complete the application. So here goes:

Tim—what can I say? I promise that I will refrain from saying “Come on Tim, we can do this.” Tim’s sense of humor made the dull and boring application process tolerable. Of course, he formatted all of the tables, reviewed the stats and did all the hard stuff.

Nirit—her job description vacillated between hunter and gatherer and my personal assistant. I learned to surround myself with organized colleagues in order to deliver a finished product worthy of recognition. “Really, I don’t know why we couldn’t do a Prezi.  Certainly, a lot more entertaining!”

Ms. Gloria—for providing us with the necessary data needed for the demographics and for not yelling at me when I misplaced the data during a chaotic “senior moment.”

Mzzz. Ann—for allowing me to collect personnel data on a daily basis for various charts. After a week in her office, I had to escape. If not, I would be addressing my classes in the familiar Louisiana drawl, drinking sweet tea and eating squirrel!!

Rocio Guillermoprieto—your insights into the acquisition of language were interwoven into all of the components.  These insights added credence to our belief that a rigorous curriculum is accessible to all students.

Jaime Enochs—for providing us with information from our WASC document and for being so supportive—your countless offers of help were appreciated.  Also the muffins were yummy!!

Tonia Berman —Access and Equity to Rigorous Curriculum for all of our students! We believe it, we live it and we shared it with the world in NYC! Individualized attention and support systems were integrated into our foundation and soon, they became the norm.

David Evers and Jackie Ng-As you can imagine, the info from David was laced with the famous “Evers Quips” but we managed to glean the needed data. On the other hand, Jackie provided us with detailed descriptions and annotations accompanied her remarks—We miss them!!

Stan Murphy—our vision and philosophy section was crafted under your guidance.  Not only did the section set the tone for the application, we used it as a guide to skillfully address all of the elements that were highlighted.

And last, but not least Crystal Alvarez (alumni)—for Googling, for revising, and for laughing at my antics during the stressful moments of revision.  Without her technical knowledge and patience, Tim’s job would have been even more stressful. She stayed after school with us (unpaid) and worked on the application until it was perfect.  I could not have done it without her!!

Thank you again--now we are a prestigious "Blue Ribbon" school!!

II.               A Note from ISA  advisor, Mrs. Berman

Greetings from ISAmbassadors!!

Students, staff and parents enjoyed a lively morning on Saturday, October 13 at our second annual ISA Pancake Breakfast.  Spirits were high as our guests were served breakfast, students entertained us with their music, and snaphots taken via an old-school polaroid camera were being glued onto home-made picture frames.

Over $1,500.00 has been raised thus far, donations are still being submitted, and 100% of the net proceeds will be used to support our students for I.S. and IB programs and events.

All ISA events are student-initiated and organized.  It is with pride that I share this news with you, as I watch our students work diligently, and with sincerity, to support their peers in need.

A HUGE thank you to all of the parents who volunteered their time to help out with the event.  We could not have done it without you!

A Note from Our Teacher Theatre/French Teacher, Mr. Poncey

Advanced Drama students from M. Poncey's class contributed their talent and time to Rise Up, a town hall meeting held in Balboa Park on October 13th, 2012 to raise awareness of prescription drug abuse in America. The town hall meeting portion of the Wake Up Now program featured a national live feed on the internet. Kayleb Kirby, Miina Coulon, Connor Boyd ( all from IS)  and Korry Mc Bride ( Sci.Tech) performed excerpts from " The Holding Cell", a play about teenagers and prescription drug addiction in front of an audience of medical experts and concerned parents. A ‘shout out’ to these performers as they mesmerized their audience especially in the climactic seizure scene bringing home the need for tighter supervision of prescription drugs in America.

The same actors are also involved in Theatrical Knights, the I.S. theater production club currently staging  " The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet", a comedic retelling of the famous Shakespearean feud which will open December 6, 2012 and run until December 8, 2012 in the Perkins Auditorium Theater. Save these dates early in your calendars as this promises to be a night of fine acting performances and fun meant for all ages.

PISA Assessment

Our school was selected to participate in the PISA Assessment. Approximately 50 sophomores will be taking the International Assessment on Tuesday, October 16.

Information from the NCES website:

The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a system of international assessments that focuses on 15-year-olds' capabilities in reading literacy, mathematics literacy, and science literacy. PISA also includes measures of general or cross-curricular competencies such as problem solving. PISA emphasizes functional skills that students have acquired as they near the end of compulsory schooling. PISA is coordinated by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), an intergovernmental organization of industrialized countries. Begun in 2000, PISA is administered every 3 years. Each administration includes assessments of all three subjects, but assesses one of the subjects in depth. The most recent administration was in 2009 and focused on reading literacy. The PISA 2009 frameworks are available at http://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/11/40/44455820.pdf.

PISA 2012 focuses on mathematics literacy and assesses reading and science literacy as well. PISA 2012 also includes computer-based assessments in mathematics literacy, reading literacy, and general problem solving assessments, and an assessment of students' financial literacy. Detailed results of PISA 2012 will be available in December 2013. The PISA 2012 draft frameworks are available at the OECD PISA webpage.

Classroom Anecdotes From Our Teachers

·         Mr. Strebler shared the following Saturday classroom synopsis:

Our first IB Econ Saturday class from 8 am until just before noon was a big success.  56 of the 63 students enrolled in IB Econ attended this voluntary class, which was held in Ms. Alcantar's bigger classroom to accommodate the large group.

The students reviewed material on supply and demand in advance of next week's test.  They were also introduced to the topic of elasticity.  Additionally, they were given their first look at what they need to do for Internal Assessment, including the chance to see exemplary work from prior students.  Finally, students learned more about the nature of their year-end IB exam.

Thanks to funds provided by the ISA, students had lots of fresh fruit, bagels, muffins, croissants, and other healthy foods, along with juices and water.  Thanks to donations from generous parents, five lucky students went home with some nice prizes.

There will be three more Saturday classes during the school year.  As most students commented that the session was both helpful and enjoyable, we expect similar good attendance at those. Below are two pictures from our session.

·         Mr. Steussy shared the following Theory of Knowledge (TOK) classroom activity:

On the week of September 24th, the Theory of Knowledge classes (TOK) participated in an activity entitled, "the masks we wear" which explores how emotions can affect our perceptions.  Students were asked to draw a mask depicting an emotion and then discuss various scenarios (e.g., you get a Mini Cooper for your birthday!) with a partner while acting that emotion out (and not naming it) and then they had to guess the emotion.  This unit on perception involves various activities designed to explore what we know and how we know things based on our perceptions.  TOK is best understood as an introduction to philosophy class and is considered by IB to be their "flagship" class.   At many IB schools the course is reserved for only the most elite IB diploma students but, here at SDHS/IS we are proud not just to offer it to all of our juniors, but we go so far as to require it.  If you've got a junior at IS, every single day they have TOK they should have an answer to, "so what did you learn in school today?" Below enjoy pictures from the activity:

We The People Competition

Our very own Stan Murphy and MVPA’s Arlene Harris will be leading our students as they participate in the We the People, The Citizen and The Constitution competition to be held on December 7 at Grossmont College. The competition supports our students as they strengthen their critical thinking muscle and of knowing the importance of civic literacy.

Welcome Back BBQ

I’m humbled and moved by the wonderful outpouring of support you have all shown me during my brief tenure at IS. Thank you for welcoming me as a full-fledged member of the San Diego High International Studies Family.  I’m concluding my third week of school where I have been trying to learn as much as possible about our wonderful school and its rich tradition.  I’m enjoying interacting and getting to know our faculty, students, and parents.  If I could use one word to describe my journey at IS thus far, it would be: impressive.  I hope to work together with each of you to continue our impressive trajectory.  Let’s build on our rich tradition and continue to expose our students to a world that promotes internationalism and to continue to establish partnerships with universities and others to strengthen our students’ IB experience. I look forward to our journey ahead.  Below please enjoy pictures of the event!

Dear San Diego High School of International Studies (IS) Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year. I trust your student’s summer recess proved a time

to relax and one that allowed him/her to reenergize in order to initiate a new and successful

school year. As the new Principal of the School of International Studies, I’m proud to be a part

of a highly successful triumvirate of students, faculty and parents. We are proud of our strong

International Baccalaureate academic tradition where high expectations will continue to be

upheld by the entire faculty and staff. We are confident our students will continue to rise to

our academic demands and we, in turn, are prepared to support them every step of their high

school journey. Please know that the rigorous academic experience at the School of International

Studies will continue to prepare them as they pursue the college and career of their choice.

In addition to our continued high expectations with respect to academics, we are also raising our

expectations with student dress for all IS scholars (all students on the San Diego High School

Educational Complex will also be held to improvements in dress). Our IS School Governance

Team recently revised our dress code policy to include one that expects students will come

to class everyday dressed in only the most appropriate of attires. The dress code further

defines ‘inappropriate dress’ to include: no tube tops; no bare midriffs or exposed cleavage; no

visible undergarments; and no shorts, skirts or dresses shorter than fingertips fully extended.

Teachers and staff will be alerting students of this new policy during the first week of school.

We will implement the dress code policy beginning Monday, September 10. We encourage you

to speak to your students with respect to this very important policy and urge you to support us

during its implementation.

To ensure the safety and security of all of our students, each student will receive a lanyard and

a student ID. We ask that all students wear the lanyard and ID while on campus. If your son/

daughter missed the assigned summer picture day, he/she will have an opportunity for a retake

in mid September. Lanyards and identification cards will be distributed to our students on

September 11.

I encourage you to become and/or to continue to be an active parent participant in the many

parent activities we have throughout the year. I look forward to seeing you at our IS Parent

Connect meetings, and our many other school related functions. We urge you to be our ally as

we work toward continuing to build upon our school’s achievements. As I often say, we’re in the

business of fostering dreams and I look forward to working with you to ensure your students’

dreams are fulfilled.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carmen García

August, 2012

Dear San Diego High School of International Studies Students, Teachers, and Parents,

I am pleased to welcome you to the 2012-2013 school year. I was recently appointed the new Principal of the School of International Studies and this letter serves as my formal introduction. Attaining a quality education proved the motivation for my parents to leave our home country in search of the elusive yet very attainable American Dream. My parents instilled in their ten children the will to ‘become someone in life’ through sheer hard work, determination, motivation, and higher education. I am proud to say that my story of overcoming language barriers can serve as our students’ story as they too aim to receive an International education that will ensure their futures are more than bright. I hold a Doctorate and Master of Arts in Education and Bachelor of Arts degrees in History and Spanish.

This year marks my 15th year in education where I have diligently worked to ensure students are well served so they succeed in school and ultimately in the college and/or career of their choice. I have had the privilege of being a classroom teacher, a central office administrator, and school administrator in three districts, two large and urban and the third a rural, isolated small district. The experiential knowledge I have gained from each of my previous positions has served to strengthen my role as an educational leader. I understand the many layers and lenses through which we educate our students and of the importance of working collaboratively to achieve our singular role: giving our students the best education possible.

Most recently, I served as Superintendent of the Borrego Springs Unified School District where we made greatstrides toward improving the academics, behavior, and dress of the student body, among other achievements. Before this, I was Principal of Roosevelt International Baccalaureate Middle School in San Diego Unified School District where teachers, parents, staff, and students also worked together to ensure students received a rigorous, quality IB Middle Years Programme education and set high expectations with respect to student dress and behavior. Before my role as the Principal at Roosevelt, I served as Assistant to Superintendent Dr. Carl A. Cohn in the SDUSD. I have also served as a high school administrator and as a central office educational researcher.

I began my career as a teacher in a large, high performing high school within the Long Beach Unified School District. The lessons learned as a classroom teacher have served as pillars in my career. The role of the teacher is fundamental in our mission to support students and I am pleased to know that teachers at the School of International Studies all share this love of students and of their academic prowess. I look forward to meeting with each of you (parents, students, and teachers) and encourage you to meet with me as I begin my ‘reading, listening and learning’ of our highly esteemed and very well respected high school. I look forward to sharing my story with each of you, but more importantly, of getting to know each of your respective stories that together become the fabric and essence of our collective school culture. In me, you have found a staunch supporter of quality, well rounded, and rigorous educational programs that prepare students for their future.

Plans are under way to build on the many successes our school has amassed over its many years and of strengthening areas of need. I look forward to the year ahead and of working shoulder to shoulder with each of you.

Sincerely,
Dr. Carmen García
