Our Principal

Meet Our Principal

klopez Welcome to Hawthorne Elementary School. I am excited about the learning environment we are creating for our students and invite you to learn more about us. We are a small neighborhood school, ideal for nurturing students to build a strong foundation for education and life.

I myself attended San Diego Unified Schools, growing up here with strong roots in the community.  Since my childhood, I've known that education was going to be my destiny. A former Reading Recovery and Literacy Resource Teacher,  I have a passion for early literacy and fostering a love of reading in children.  I attended San Diego State University and National University, receiving both my bachelor's and master's degrees as well as my teaching and administrative credentials.  I returned  to San Diego Unified, where I work every day to make a difference in my students' lives.

Hawthorne is making strong academic gains and it is my belief that these gains will continue, as we are committed to excellence. Our teachers work hard to ensure student success and we take pride in the accomplishments our students make.

In addition to academics, our students are provided opportunities to participate in activities such as music, dance, and drama.  We believe that a well rounded education provides our students with the best chances for success.  We welcome parent and community involvement in our school because we know that this is also key to our children's success. Our PTA plays a big role in organizing the many family events that take place at our school.

Our community connection is strong as well. Parents and guardians of our students get involved as does our neighborhood and local business community. One of our newest education partners is Northminster Presbyterian Church, whose volunteers have been sprucing up our campus. We have gardens for our students, not just to beautify our learning environment, but to provide hands-on science opportunities for all grades.

There is so much happening at Hawthorne. I am enjoying serving as the leader of this great school and I am excited about our wonderful students, teachers and programs. If you are considering enrolling your child at Hawthorne, please feel free to call us any time. We are available to answer your questions and welcome your participation.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Lopez
