Tomorrow is a National Holiday celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday and his contributions to our world.

The tragic events in Connecticut last month have caused all of us in education to reexamine our safety policies and practices. Happy New Year Sandburg Families

This is Principal Martin with the first Sunday Notes for 2013.

I hope you have had a great holiday with family and friends. School resumes tomorrow.

Sandburg Students have logged more than 5880 hours on learning upgrade.  Over winter break 30 students have completed a course at the gold level bringing the total of Gold Certificates to 92. We have a total of 14 students that have completed courses at the silver Level and 73 students that have completed courses at the bronze level. In February, we will be celebrating students that have completed grade level or above courses at the Gold level.

Students can wake up their body and brain every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:25 with our PAWS Running Club. See the website at www.pawsrunningclub.com or link through the Sandburg website. Our students have run 3627 miles. We know there is a strong learning correlation between mind and body. Running is a life long form of exercise that is awesome for our Tigers.

IXL is an online math practice program available to all of our students. We will use this for Kindergarten and first grade students to qualify for the celebration in February. So far nine kindergarten students have completed over 1000 problems with one of those students completing over 3000 problems. We have set a goal of 2000 problems for our Celebration So far thirteen first grade students have completed over 1000 problems with one of those students over 6000 problems.

I want to thank all the Sandburg volunteers; you make a significant difference in the opportunities for our students. There is always a need for volunteers.

    Hello Sandburg Families,

This is Principal Martin with our Sandburg Sunday Notes.

As we hear and see the news of the tragedy in Connecticut, our hearts pour out to those families. At Sandburg we understand that our work goes so far beyond such things as test scores, homework, schedules, or meetings.  One of the foundations of learning is creating and maintaining a safe nurturing environment. We understand that our work of educating children determines lives. At Sandburg we work very hard to make sure our students feel that sense of security.

I often refer to Sandburg as a community school. It is in times such as these that communities pull together and provide support for each other. I have included an attachment and links to resources to assist students, families and schools below.

We have lunch with Dad on Tuesday and Thursday; please sign at the office before joining us at lunch.

This is our last week of school before our winter break. School resumes on January 7, 2013

    Hello Sandburg Families,

This is Principal Martin with our Sandburg Sunday Notes.

Students have a chance to shop this week at the holiday, Jolly Gift Boutique. The Boutique will be open after school Tuesday through Friday. Please look for the flyer that was sent home.

Our Foundation raises funds that support programs for our students. Shopping cards are a great way to raise funds. Sandburg gets one dollar for every ten dollar Starbucks card. If every family purchased one ten dollar Starbucks card per month. This would bring in $700 per month for our students. Please support the foundation programs.

We have a full rack of lost and found items please check with your children and pick up any lost items.

Technology education is and will continue to be a critical issue in the lives of our Sandburg students. Please take a few minutes to complete an online technology survey. You may take the survey anywhere you have internet access. We will have our Library computer lab open before and after school on Monday and Tuesday. The last day to take the survey will be Tuesday, December 11, 2012. This information can also be found onSandburg’s web page, http://www.sandi.net/sandburg

The survey will provide data as a means to assess Sandburg’s need for technology in specific areas, so that we can make decisions concerning priority targets for technology improvement and guide the development of a technology plan.

    Hello Sandburg Families,

This is Principal Martin with our Sandburg Sunday Notes.

All of us at Sandburg hope you have had an invigorating break and are ready to put your full effort into the last four weeks of school in 2012.

The online software opportunity for students to build skills is amazing.  As of today, students have logged more than 3488 hours on Learning Upgrade. Thirty-eight students have completed a Learning Upgrade course at the Gold Level. We will celebrate students spending time, developing skills, thinking, and working with math and language arts concepts. In February, we will celebrate all students that complete a Learning Upgrade course at the Gold Level. I will be working with Kindergarten and First grade teachers to set student goals for an IXL celebration.

We are finishing up our parent –teacher conferences on Monday and Tuesday, these are minimum days. After-school classes resume on Wednesday.

California Education Code requires that children be provided the opportunity for a meal served during the school day; please follow the link on our website to read a letter from our Deputy Superintendent, http://www.sandi.net/site/default.aspx?DomainID=5691 .

Starting on Wednesday November 28th, we will add twenty minutes to our minimum day to allow for all students to eat lunch on our minimum days. Students will be dismissed from lunch at 12:20. Parents wishing to sign their children out early may do so by signing out with your child’s teacher.
