This year’s menu has been designed specifically to serve local, fresh and seasonal foods. In addition our salad bars will be serving garden grown foods at select sites. Each day, the San Diego Unified School District prepares and serves: 45,000 breakfasts 71,000 lunches 5,000snacks 11,000 suppers

Food Services

School meals are served to sudents under the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program and follow the nutrition guidelines prescribed by The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.  The law was designed to reduce the incidence of childhood obesity by providing healthier choices to students.  To learn more about the new school meal regulations visit www.traytalk.org  Food Services has embraced the new regulations but were already positioned to be in compliance since there are salad bars in each of our schools. 

These new standards include:

   •     Increased produce options, ensuring that students receive both fruits and vegetables every day of the week.
   •     A ban on unhealthy trans fats.     
   •     Portion size guidelines and calorie limits based on the age of children served.
   •     Increased emphasis on whole grain products.
   •     Limits on the types of milk served, with an emphasis on low fat (1%) and non-fat varieties.
   •     Reductions in sodium levels to be phased in over several years.
    
Meals and snacks are also served through the Seamless Summer Feeding Option and the Child and Adult Care Feeding Program, both United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) supported programs.  Meals are also vended to childcare centers, private schools, charter schools and other organizations located in San Diego.  For more details on our breakfast, lunch and snack programs, click here: descriptions of meal programs.

Supporting Programs 

The Food Services Department's supporting programs have added important dimensions to our basic programs.

• The Farm to School program gives us fresh locally grown foods that simultaneously nourish our children and support our local farmers and communities, and educate students about where their food comes from.
• The Breakfast in the Classroom program serves over 30,000 breakfasts a day to students right at their desks insuring that they are given the nutritional boost they need to be ready to learn.
• The Summer Fun Café brings healthy lunches and snacks to children during the summer when school is not in session.  Studies indicate the summer lunch program helps to bridge the summer learning gap.
• The new Supper program serves late afternoon meals to students in San Diego Unified School District's Primetime program.
• Breakfast meals are available to students mandated to attend Saturday School.

Program Goals

• To provide healthy meals daily to students, preparing them to learn and guiding them in the process to develop positive life-long eating habits.

• To meet USDA and State nutritional guidelines.

• Continue to expand program access to student meals.

• To remain a financially self-sufficient department.

• To continue to look for partnerships and coalitions among public and private sectors to enhance programs and quality of food.

Meal Programs

SDUSD's meal programs have received national recognition and many awards for their innovation and quality of service.  With the new meal regulations we continue to raise the standards of school food.  The café concepts of the two main meal programs, Kid's Choice Café in elementary schools and SanDi Coast Café in secondary schools, present a healthy, attractive, convenient and fun atmosphere for students.

	Breakfast in the Classroom With Breakfast in the Classroom, students in selected San Diego Unified Schools get breakfast with their first lessons of the day, every day.  Read more.
	Kid's Choice Café Kid’s Choice Café is an elementary school healthy-choice breakfast and lunch program that encourages students to choose foods wisely and establish lifelong positive eating habits.  Read more.
	SanDi Coast Café SanDi Coast Café is a new concept in service and menu choices introduced for the 2009-10 school year.  It offers a wide variety of choices to encourage students to have a healthy breakfast and lunch.  Read more.
	Summer Fun Café San Diego Unified School District partners with the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department to bring the US Department of Agriculture's "Seamless Summer Feeding Option" to local children during the summer months.  Read more.
	Farm to School Farm to School connects students to San Diego farmers by sourcing and serving locally grown and when possible organic foods at lunch and/or snack time.  Local foods are served district wide at all grade levels and grown within 150 miles of SDUSD by small family farmers.  Read More.
