Food and Nutrition Services is committed to providing healthy school meals and snacks to the students of the San Diego Unified School District.  The team of dedicated food and nutrition professionals supports student academic success and promotes healthful eating habits that lead to lifelong positive nutrition practices.

Meal Programs

San Diego Unified's meal programs have received national recognition and many awards for their innovation and quality of service.  With the new meal regulations we continue to raise the standards of school food. With Breakfast in the Classroom, more than 30,000 breakfasts per day are served to students right at their desks ensuring that they are given the nutritional boost they need to be ready to learn.  Read more.

San Diego Unified partners with the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department and community organiztions to bring healthy lunches and snacks to children when school is not in session helping to bridge the summer learning gap.   Read More.

Farm to School provides fresh, locally grown foods that simultaneously nourish students and support local farmers and communities, as well as educate students about where their food comes from. Read More.
 

School Meal Standards


School meals are served to students under the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program and follow the nutrition guidelines prescribed by The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The law was designed to reduce the incidence of childhood obesity by providing healthier choices to students. These standards include:

• Increased produce options, ensuring that students receive both fruits and vegetables
  every day of the week.
• A ban on unhealthy trans fats.
• Portion size guidelines and calorie limits based on the age of children served.
• Increased emphasis on whole grain products.
• Limits on the types of milk served, with an emphasis on low fat (1%) and non-fat varieties.
• Reductions in sodium levels to be phased in over several years.

Meals and snacks are also served through the Seamless Summer Feeding Option and the Child and Adult Care Feeding Program, both United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) supported programs. Meals are also vended to childcare centers, private schools, charter schools and other organizations located in San Diego.
