The Young Scholars Academic Fair is a California nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting educational enrichment for youth in San Diego County schools. Each year, the corporation organizes interschool trivia competitions for middle school students, bringing them together to participate in quizbowl matches. Quizbowl is a type of trivia game in which two school teams play against each other. The categories are mathematics, science, literature, history and current events. Our main purposes are to help youth gain experience working collaboratively and inspire students to become passionate about learning for the sake of learning.

YSAF is a student-founded and student-run organization that began as a program through Scripps Ranch High School’s Academic League team. In the first year, the program involved forty students from Marshall, Wangenheim, Oak Valley, and Grant Middle Schools. The first competition was held at Scripps Ranch High School on March 12th, 2011, consisting of three preliminary matches in the morning followed by a championship match in theafternoon. The Young Scholars Academic Fair became a nonprofit organization on July 1st, 2011 and is now hoping to expand to include eight schools in its second year. Students who compete in YSAF in middle school will be prepared to participate in Academic League at the high school level.

Here at Wangenheim, Mrs.Vanderhurst and Ms. Douglas advise and manage the YSAF team. The team meets for practice every Monday throughout the year. We currently have 25 students vying for the 13 places on the team. This year the competition is scheduled for March. If you wish to know more about YSAF, please contact Ms. Douglas at ddouglas1@sandi.net.
