Counseling and Guidance Department Life Skills Education
Overview
The Life Skills Education component of the Counseling & Guidance Department is
designed to provide effective, comprehensive, and research-based Alcohol, Tobacco,
Other Drug (ATOD) and violence prevention and intervention services, as well
as to provide students with strategies to make healthy choices that contribute
to a meaningful life. The components of this program meet the state and federal
requirements of Safe & Drug Free Schools & Communities (SDFSC) and Tobacco Use
Prevention Education (TUPE) .
Goals and Objectives

To provide prevention education to all students in ways that support student achievement |

To provide equity of access and support to all students through youth development prevention strategies, resiliency and asset building programs. |

To provide intervention services to students evidencing or demonstrating emergent or intermittent attitudes or behaviors as related to ATOD and violence that interfere with student achievement. |

To expand ATOD and violence prevention education and intervention through parent and community outreach and collaboration with federal, state, city, and community agencies. |
| |
To provide research-based curriculum and interventions, conduct annual and intermittent program evaluations, and revise goals and objectives based on data. |

Programs & Services
Botvin Life Skills 
A research-based, proven effective substance abuse prevention program for students in grades 6-8. This developmentally appropriate curriculum addresses the underlying causes of substance abuse and provides students with the skills needed to make healthy decisions.

Project Towards No Drugs (TND) 
A research-based interactive program designed to help high school youth (14-19 years old) resist substance use. Project TND teaches participants increased coping and self-control skills that allow them to grasp the misconceptions that may lead to substance use, understand the sequence and consequences of using substances, correct myths, demonstrate effective communication, and state a commitment to discuss substance abuse with others.

Insight Groups 
Group program for teens, grades 6-12, who have abused alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs. Through interactive group meetings, led by a credentialed school counselor, teens look at their drug use, consider the consequences of their use and make a decision about continued use.

Tobacco Education Group (TEG): A Positive Alternative to Suspension 
Group program for students in grades 7-12 who don't want to stop using tobacco. TEG is designed to move teenage tobacco users from not wanting to quit to wanting to quit. Through videos, demonstrations, and cooperative learning, teenage tobacco users learn about the negative consequences of tobacco use. They gain the knowledge, motivation, and action steps to move toward a healthier, tobacco-free lifestyle. This group is led by a credentialed school counselor.

Tobacco Awareness Program (TAP) 
Voluntary cessation group program for tobacco-using teens in grades 7-12. Led by a credentialed school counselor, this program is designed to provide information, motivation, and support to students to successfully stop using cigarettes or spit tobacco.

Guiding Good Choices 
A research- based, proven-effective alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention program that gives parents the skills they need to ensure the future well-being of their children. This program is designed for parents of children ages 9-14, and is facilitated by credentialed school counselors. Topics include strengthening family bonds, managing conflict, and helping children say no to drugs.

Community Conversations
These forums allow local stakeholder organization, journalism students, community members, and parents come together on issues such as coming of age, alcohol and border/binge drinking.
