08-09 NEWS

For the 08-09 school year, classes will resume September 2, 2008 at 7:58.

Class lists will be posted on the windows facing Linda Vista Rd. the weekend before school begins.

The school office hours will be from 7:00 - 3:00 beginning August 22.

Chesterton Elementary is participating in a fitness program sponsored by the San Diego Padres. The San Diego Padres allocated funding to purchase the equipment for the program. Our P.E. teacher, Mr. Chavira, organized the activities in which students would participate. Every morning a grade level participates in a rotation of ten activities each lasting two minutes within a 30-minute time frame. Volunteer parents help teachers manage stations. The San Diego Padres Friar visited while our second graders were taking their turn. The event was filmed and was broadcasted on the jumbo screen at Petco Park during one of the Padres’ home games in 2007.

Chesterton Elementary School (Grades 1 - 5) is located in the community of Linda Vista in San Diego, California (7335 Wheatley St., San Diego, 92111 see map). It is part of the San Diego Unified School District. Class hours are 7:58 - 2:20 everyday except Wednesday, a minimum day, and classes are dismissed at 12:05 every Wednesday. The school office opens at 7:00 A.M. and closes at 4:00 P.M. No uniforms are required.

Our school, which is on the traditional schedule, has approximately 575 students. Chesterton has 26 regular and three Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) classrooms, grades 3 through 5. A majority of students come from military families living in Chesterton military housing. Through the Voluntary Ethnic Enrollment Program (VEEP) and School Choice Program over 200 students choose to attend Chesterton, enriching the school's cultural diversity.

Chesterton is a high-functioning school academically. Students perform at a superior level based on a 2006-2007 Academic Performance Index (A.P.I.) score of 823, placing the school with the top 20% of all schools statewide.

Chesterton maintains many special programs to encourage and reinforce school success and spirit. Monthly award ceremonies offer special recognition to achieving students and are characterized by virtually 100% of parents being in attendance. A very active PTA provides programs which enhance the school experience. The Principal schedules regular informal group meetings with parents to afford on-going opportunities for parent input.

A Little History

The school first opened in temporary bungalows in the early part of 1943 at a time when the community of Linda Vista was growing rapidly during World War II. In 1958 the first permanent building, which currently houses the cafeteria and auditorium, was built. Various stories have been told concerning the naming of the school, however, it was simply named after Chesterton Drive, the street which formerly was on the south side of the school grounds. A number of street names were changed with the building of military homes, and there is no longer a street of this name in the area.
