The Office of College, Career and Technical Education (CCTE) leads the District efforts to improve student achievement by integrating core academic subjects with relevant, challenging technical and occupational knowledge. CCTE programs prepare students for 21st century challenges and opportunities. To ensure a successful transition from the critical years of childhood to young adulthood, CCTE equips students with the skills needed to become responsible citizens, contributing members of society and gainfully employed. This is achieved through a collaborative process for continuous improvement guided by partnerships with the greater community.
CCTE programs are standards-based on rigorous academics applied and instructed through real world application. Career Technical Education (CTE) courses are offered in 15 industry sectors tied to local economic and workforce needs. CTE is comprised of a sequence of courses—exploratory, foundation, intermediate and advanced. Most advanced courses are funded through the Regional Occupational Programs. These courses provide high school students with skills necessary to succeed in post-secondary/college education, entry-level employment and career advancement. The instructional integration of academic and workplace skills provides career awareness and exploration, including paid and un-paid internship opportunities. Over 50 CTE courses are approved for UC “a-g” college entrance credit.
Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) operates under the auspices of CCTE. This program is comprised of 13 units representing all four military branches. Since 1919 JROTC has benefited tens of thousands of District students by fostering academic, social and personal achievement. JROTC served 2,331 students in 2010 with instruction and guidance that accelerated student achievement and opportunities, including college/university admissions and scholarships. The mission of JROTC is to motivate young people to become better citizens.
Overseen by CCTE, Small Learning Communities (SLCs) and career academies offer personalized learning environments proven to increase attendance, test scores, graduation rates, and college acceptance. Project Based Learning (PBL) professional development series offers interdisciplinary instructional teams opportunities to develop common projects and curriculum. CCTE issued 4,093 work permits in 2010 to students meeting eligibility requirements. Work Experience Education (WEE) is provided through CCTE as are the 21st Century ASSETs Grants that provides for extended day learning opportunities for additional career explorations, credit recovery and enrichment activities to high school students. CCTE is a key partner in the planning, development and implementation of 22 capital facility improvement projects made possible through Proposition 1D grants and Proposition S and Z.
