Our goal at Carson is to cultivate meaningful learning experiences for students, teachers and parents. We see each of our students as individuals whose knowledge and experience can be drawn from and built upon. Our instructional intent is to strike a fine balance between passing on a tradition of established knowledge useful in today’s society, and designing new instruction around the diversity of our students. In keeping with Grant Wiggin’s notion of enduring understanding, we believe that Carson students must be able to apply their knowledge in a new situation without the assistance of a teacher, otherwise we have not taught them at all. Our current staff and faculty serves over 620 students from Preschool through Grade 5. Carson students have a full six hours of instruction Monday through Friday, each and every day. They participate in classes in a range of academic subjects, learn to swim at the Mission Valley YMCA, and study Jazz music with Glen Fisher and other professional San Diego musicians. Carson was the first elementary school built in Linda Vista, a community in San Diego, California. Our unusual two-story building was constructed in 1941 and is adorned by two bas-relief panels by San Diego sculptor Donal Hord. This artwork is part of the San Diego Historical Society’s Public Works Tour.
