Bell Times Adjustment Initiative

In its initial response to the evolving state budget crisis, the district developed a number of proposals to help balance the budget. One proposal included a bell time adjustment proposal that would affect 59 schools, resulting in a savings to the district of $2.9 million. Subsequent talks with the board of education, parents and community members uncovered the need to re-examine bell schedule impacts on school enrollment, instructional programs, day care, safety and security, and joint-facility usage. The Transportation Department conducted further analysis by meeting with staff and parent groups to confirm school site needs.

As a result of this additional research and dialogue, a revised bell change schedule has been developed. The adjustments eliminate major swings in start times from 2007-08 to 2008-09. In most cases the bell time change is 30 minutes or less. Schools not listed will maintain their current bell schedules in the coming year. These revisions result in a $1.5 million savings to the district for the 2008-09 budget.
