| Without the help of our extremely supportive and
dedicated parents, many of the programs and services
listed below would just not be possible. Thank
you parents!
During the school year, the PTA organizes a variety
of classes that are taught on the school campus
for all grade levels. All classes are before or
after regular school hours for the day of the week
that they are offered. The classes usually meet
once a week for 4-8 weeks, but may vary based on
the program offered. All programs are fee-structured.
The program schedule will be delivered to you through
your Tuesday envelope. For further questions, please contact Roni Lincoln at (858)472-0908.

The Partnerships in Education Program (PIE), is
a district-sponsored program established in 1982,
is committed to providing meaningful opportunities
for business/community organizations and volunteers
to build reform-level partnerships that support
teaching and learning in the classroom.
This PTA sponsored program works with parents, teachers,
students and school administrators to promote positive
behavior traits in our community. Each month a different
character building theme is emphasized. The committee
also creates ongoing messages supporting acceptance
of differences among people, good sportsmanship,
the use of kind language, and opposing bullying.
The PTA sponsors After School Enrichment Programs,
Special Assemblies, Missoula Players and the Fifth
Grade Variety Show.
Each year, a group of fifth grade parents forms
this committee in an effort to provide a variety
of special class activities, social outings, and
service projects designed to promote class spirit
for the students' last year of elementary school.
The purpose is to foster friendships which are intended
to ease the transition to middle school. The Fifth
Grade Committee produces and sells the annual school
yearbook, organizes the Fifth Grade Promotion Ceremony
and reception, and provides a lasting class gift
for the school.

This PTA sponsored program provides organized playground
games and activities for our children on Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Fridays for grades 1 through 5. This
program is designed to enrich the playground experience
by providing an outdoor play curriculum that builds
self-confidence, models effective communication
and conflict resolution skills while encouraging
teamwork and sportsmanship. Parent volunteers supervise
activities under the direction of the Playground
Partners coach. Children may choose whether or not
to participate.
Outstanding scholastic achievement or citizenship
is recognized at the Friday assemblies.
The Red Ribbon Celebration was started in California
to honor the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique
Camarena. Every year the children of Bird Rock Elementary use
this celebration to pledge a drug-free lifestyle.
Parents and teachers use the event as a way to communicate
to children about the problems of drug abuse.
This
traffic safety program is under the supervision
of the San Diego Police Department. Safety Patrol
students are 5th graders who are recruited in the
spring of 4th grade. They undergo training in the
spring and attend weekly meetings for ongoing training
with a San Diego Police Officer. They wear red shirts
and caps, and are stationed on La Jolla Hermosa
Avenue.
Each
May, twenty fourth grade students who express an
interest in helping their friends resolve problems
are selected by their teachers to be prospective
Peace Patrol members. In the fall, these students
are trained by their Peace Patrol Advisor in essential
elements of conflict resolution. A schedule is prepared,
and teams of two Peace Patrol members are assigned
to mediate conflicts that occur on the playground.
Using an official Problem-Solving Checklist, the
teams follow a standardized mediation process. Peace
Patrol members receive ongoing support and supervision.
Forms are given to the teacher and the Peace Patrol
advisor for documentation.
4th and 5th grade students are elected by the student
body to serve as officers of the Student Council.
Each class in grades 3 through 5 has one elected
class representative also. This organized group
of students meets regularly to share in the life
of the school. Student Council representatives are
the mind, heart and hands of school activities.
In May, a week of appreciation is dedicated to all
of our wonderful teachers who have given so much
of themselves to our children throughout the year.
PTA Parent Room Representatives coordinate daily
special ways of thanking the teachers. On Wednesday,
the PTA sponsors a luncheon for the teachers in
the auditorium.
This program offers a chance for parents to help
our teachers with all those tedious tasks: cutting,
folding, stapling, tracing, collating, etc., that
take away from their valuable teaching time. The
PTA sponsors this event in October, January and
April. Look for sign-up sheets in the Tuesday Envelope.
