During the month of April, the students will be reading and listening to more non-fiction books. We are finishing up our fiction unit where students ask the question: “What’s the author’s big idea?” or “What is the author trying to teach us?” During our non-fiction or expository unit, the students will look at text features (table of contents, diagrams, etc.), text structures (compare and contrast, question and answer, etc.), and identify the big idea in the book. The students will study plants and then insects as they investigate non-fiction books. One way you can help your child with this unit, is to read non-fiction books that interest your child or have your child choose a topic and check out books from the library based on this topic. Your student can then share about the information they are learning on their sharing day. We all learn from each other and kindergarten students love to know about real things! This will also help them as they begin to write their own non-fiction pieces of writing.
The students are starting a math unit on measurement this week. The students will measure objects around the classroom with non-traditional units of measurement such as cubes and paper clips. The students will also learn how to making good estimations and we will also discuss capacity and how much something can hold.
The students will continue to learn about maps and our world in social studies.
