This week we are working on researching a variety of nonfiction topics. Each day students will make an entry in theiir writer's notebook.
Tips for students:
1. What is the purpose of your article?
If your purpose is to compare, use a compare and contrast format.
a. One format talks about one of the items compared in the first section of the paper. Then it talks about the second item in the second section. Finally it talks about how they are alike.
Example:
Frogs are..... They also.... Another interesting thing about frogs is...
Toads are.... They can.... Toads are wonderful....
Both frogs and toads are amphibians. They both.... Another thing they have in common is...
b. A second comparison format talks about both items being compared at the same time.
Example: Frogs have short front legs and long back legs. Toads have short back legs and long front legs.
If the purpose of your paper is to convince someone of something you may want to use a description format.
If the order something is presented is important, use a chronological order or sequence format.
If there is a problem and you want to make others aware of the problem and its causes, use cause and effect format.
If there is a problem and you want to suggest some solutions, use the problem solution format.
Be sure to fairly represent all the ideas and try not to bias your audience.
When writing your paper be sure to include:
Facts
Experts names and quotes from the experts.
Both sides of an issue.
