Reading: We are involved in a unit of inquiry titled What? So What? Determining Relevancy in Expository Text.
Students will develop the skills to determine what information and details are relevant to bigger (universal) ideas in nonfiction writing. They will learn to identify the main and supporting details in a text and gather information from multiple sources to compare ideas across texts.
Writing: Our focus this month is on nonfiction writing. Students will be learn how to write a summary related to expository articles and experiment with persuasive writing. We also will have some fun with poetry.
Word Study: We are studying prefixes, suffixes, homophones, compounds, and other commonly used spelling patterns. A pre test is giving on Monday, followed by a final test on Friday. Please help your child study their words throughout the week.
Cursive: We are almost done with the lowercase letters and ready to begin the uppercase letters. The kids love it!
Math: We are well into our multiplication and division module. The students are learning how to multiply a 1-digit number by a 2-, 3-, and 4-digit number. In division, they are learning how to divide with remainders and use different strategies to compute long division problems.
Science: We are having fun learning about probability and conducting different experiments to help us understand this concept. Our next unit will begin after testing. it is titled Physics of Sound. The students will learn about how sound travels through air, water, and solids.
Social Studies: We have been learning about different Native Americans tribes and cultures. Next we will begin a study on the government and the different divisions of our local and federal branches.
Health: We have began to take a look at healthy eating habits and the food pyramid.
