Teacher of the Year
Middle Level
Courtney Browne, Mann Middle School of Expedition
Science, Art and Computer Teacher
Courtney Browne, seventh grade science, art and computer
teacher at Mann Middle School of Expedition, is the 2007-08
Teacher of the Year at the Middle Level. The native New Yorker
and former pre-med student spent many years teaching in informal
settings before she had what she calls her “Eureka” moment.
She realized she wanted to have her own classroom and get to
know students over the course of the entire school year.
Prior to becoming a credentialed teacher, Courtney taught at the Birch Aquarium; worked at Homestead National Monument in Nebraska teaching students about flora and fauna; tutored and taught swimming to elementary students in the British West Indies; led hiking and backpacking trips through the Outdoor Program in Virginia; and tutored illiterate adults in Connecticut.
Today, she teaches science, computer literacy and art to students of varying ethnic backgrounds including Mexican, Sudanese, Somali and Cambodian. Regardless of the setting, her philosophy of teaching remains the same. All students possess unique talents and all students have the ability to learn. She abides by three rules: attitude is everything; enthusiasm is catching; and always makes others feel comfortable.
Her commitment to education goes beyond the classroom. She is the science department chair.
She started volunteer days at the Tijuana Estuary on Saturdays, an effort that began as a student
project but some students now have their whole families involved. As part of the school’s “6 to
6” program, she leads a robotics club, technology club and initiated an African drumming class.
She is on the Board of Directors for Unity Tech Fitness Center, a local non-profit organization located
near the school. She is currently organizing a joint venture on bullying prevention between
the school and Unity Tech.
“Courtney’s zest for teaching radiates enthusiasm and joy for learning and this has a positive effect on all around her, be they students, staff or parents. She is enthusiastic and motivational as she interacts,” says Mann Principal Valerie Voss. “Courtney is an outstanding teacher who exerts great influence. She is valued for her knowledge of science, technology and art.” Courtney earned her M.Ed/Single Subject Credential in Biology and General Science, from UCSD; and her B.A. in Biology and Studio Art, from Hollins University, Roanoke, VA.
