District Awards and Recognition Classified Employees of the Year 2006
Overview The California Legislature passed a resolution in 1985 honoring the role of classified school employees. With the passage of Senate Bill 1552 in 1986, Classified School Employee Week became an annual event designated by law during the third full week of every May. Classified employees have cared for generations of students in San Diego and across the nation. These caring, committed professionals keep schools running by performing essential jobs that help students learn. They include our administrative and clerical support staff, custodians, bus drivers, food service professionals, maintenance technicians, landscape technicians and many more. They also include employees who may not work directly at school sites, but at the central office and other facilities. From employees in accounting operations to mail and printing services, the contributions of classified employees throughout the district provide the foundation for making our schools, offices and facilities operate efficiently, effectively and safely. The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is proud to recognize the more than 7,400 classified employees in the district during this year’s Classified School Employee Week Classified Woman of the Year Barbara Navarette - Community Services Officer for Euclid Elementary Barbara played a pivotal role this year on Euclid’s campus in helping to raise over $50,000 and helping to collect more than 66,000 teddy bears and stuffed animals during the 15th Annual Teddy Bear Drive. Her dedication led to the most successful Teddy Bear Drive to date.
Barbara is a member of the School Police Policy and Procedure committee.
She has volunteered to be the secretary and meticulously keeps minutes
for the majority of the committee meetings. She is also a member of the
Department’s Social Committee. She actively participates and plans department functions and fosters a team building spirit. She is a great resource to other Community Service Officers and provides mentoring and coaching. She is an exemplary employee and human being. Barbara’s caring and dedication shows in her work. For the past two years, she has helped coordinate a Christmas breakfast party in collaboration with the Lake Murray Kiwanis Club, which has benefited hundreds of children in the Mid City Area. She voluntarily started the Planet Protector Program with the “6 to 6” Program
and on her own time, coordinates guest speakers on issues such as crime
and violence awareness in the community.
Barbara continuously puts the needs and safety of the children first. When the idea of a Health and Safety Fair was proposed for Spring 2005, Barbara stepped in to coordinate and organize this fantastic community event. She coordinated a bike helmet distribution which fitted and supplied appropriate bike riding safety gear to more than 250 Euclid boys and girls.
Barbara is a role model for the community, staff and students of what hard work, dedication and caring can do for a community. San Diego City Schools, Police Services and Euclid Elementary are lucky to share Barbara.
Classified Man of the Year David Lucas - Building Services Supervisor II for Lafayette Elementary School
David has been employed with San Diego City Schools for 22 years.
At Lafayette Elementary, he is known as the “go to guy” in most any situation: a ball on the roof, a quick room setup for a meeting, a flooded bathroom, or just meeting the many daily needs of the staff and students. David has taken it upon himself to learn American Sign Language (ASL) so he can better communicate with the deaf students at Lafayette. David provides extraordinary service to the students, parents and staff at Lafayette. He watches out for all of the students. David is quick to respond to any request, always with a smile. David has been described as kind and sensitive to the individual needs of Lafayette’s unique student population. He completes all tasks, pleasant or not, without a grimace or complaint, only a smile.
David is a role model of what an extraordinary employee should be. He supports the staff in so many ways. He is a good friend and a great team member at Lafayette. David knows all the children by name and makes each one feel special. He adds his “musical touch” to everything he does, from playing background piano music to the principal’s announcements, to delighting the students and staff with his musical talents. David provides the necessary services in the area of Plant Operations – but his contributions to Lafayette Elementary go far beyond that. >>View Classified Man and Woman Nominees by Site >>View Classified Employee Representatives (named to represent their site or department at Board ceremony) Related Resources
