Phil Ensberg, Secondary Teacher
The Preuss School, UCSD
Middle Level Teacher of the Year

Phil Ensberg, a secondary teacher at The Preuss School UCSD, is making a profound impact on low-income, college-bound students, all the first in their families to attend college. His approach to teaching and learning is rooted in the belief that all students, regardless of their family income level or ethnicity, should not only have the opportunity to go to college, but also innovative methods should be used to motivate them to reach their optimal potential.

Jennifer Hunt, Special Education/Integrated Life Skills Teacher
Field Elementary School
Elementary Level Teacher of the Year

Jennifer Hunt is a Special Education/Integrated Life Skills (ILS) teacher at Field Elementary, whose dedication to all students’ learning makes her a role model for her peers and a hero for her students and their parents. When Jennifer stepped on Field’s turf four years ago, the school’s ILS program was primarily focused on “taking care” of the medically fragile children enrolled there. Since most of these students, who use wheelchairs, have limited vision, do not verbally communicate, have significant brain damage, and require frequent professional medical assistance, little was expected of them. Jennifer’s innovative outlook shed light on her students’ capacity for learning and stretched their curiosity and enthusiasm in astounding ways.
