Area 5 Superintendent
Hoover and San Diego Clusters
Before becoming Area 5 Superintendent, Mitzi Merino was principal at Carson, Euclid and Hancock elementary schools. She also served as a School Improvement Officer, overseeing as many as to 21 elementary schools throughout the district.
She received her bachelor's degree at UCLA, teaching credential from UCSD and a master's degree in education from SDSU.
She is dedicated to making sure every student succeeds with the help of the entire school community -- families, faculty, staff and local supporters, as well as the Cluster Committees in each high school area.
She believes it is important to provide a strong educational foundation and create a love for learning. In order to support this effort, she spends as much time as possible at schools, working side-by-side with principals, teachers and students. She ensures everyone will do everything necessary to make sure that students meet and exceed academic standards. As Area Superintendent, she also helps plan and will sometimes lead professional development designed to strengthen our teaching practice.
