Proposition S Bond Program

On November 4, 2008, nearly 69 percent of San Diego voters passed the $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure, Proposition S. This bond program is providing resources to the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) to repair, renovate and revitalize its neighborhood schools.

Prop. S extends the previous voter-approved Prop. MM tax rate ($66.70 per $100,000 assessed value of taxable property), from 2029 to 2044.

The Board of Education approved a phasing plan for Prop. S that is being implemented by the Facilities Planning and Construction Division. Prop. S funds must be used for the projects listed in the bond language placed before the voters, and cannot be used for teacher or administrative salaries.

All SDUSD schools are currently benefiting from Prop. S as a result of the i21 Interactive Classroom Initiative. The i21 classroom suites are being installed throughout the district, delivering 21st century technology designed to create an engaging and personalized learning environment. The main components of the classroom suite include: an interactive whiteboard, an audio-visual cabinet, a teacher’s presentation station, a wireless voice amplification system, an advanced-model document camera, a classroom DVD player, a teacher's tablet (computer) and netbooks (computers) for each student.

The scope of work under Prop. S also includes replacing portable classrooms with permanent buildings, Americans with Disabilities Act improvements for high school stadiums, technology upgrades, and heating/ventilation/air-conditioning renovations.

In addition, there are several College, Career & Technical Education projects underway at high schools throughout the district. Partially funded by Prop. S and the state's Prop. 1D, College, Career Technical Education Programs integrate core academics with technical and occupational training to prepare students for college and careers.
