Homework

Starting Friday, September 14, I will send home a homework packet with a full week's assignments.  Each packet will contain:
Word study:  The emphasis will be placed on phonetic sounds and different spelling patterns.  The weekly words from the packet will be used for a spelling quiz on Fridays.
Writing assignment: Each week, a writing assignment will be either creative writing or literature response.  Your child may need help in generating ideas or sounding out words.  Encourage your child to sound out words and not too concerned about the perfect spelling.
Math worksheets:  will be related to the math concepts that we study for each week.

The homework should be written in pencil neatly.  NO PEN PLEASE!  Completed work is to be returned the following Friday.  Graded homework will be sent home the following Thursday.

Home Reading

Reading at home is essential to building your child’s confidence as a reader, as wellas giving your child practice at becoming a good reader.  As part of the homework each week, I will be asking you to read to your child, with your child or, listen to your child read at least 20 minutes a day. Part of learning to read involves listening to others read, “reading”books from memory, retelling favorite books using the pictures, and using whatyou know about letter sounds and picture clues to figure out the text.  Please be patient and encouraging.  Learning to read means not being afraid to try.
