  • Over 370 student made videos submitted in statewide contest; several from San Diego Unified schools

    371 videos were submitted from high school students, representing 35 counties in California as part of the Directing Change video contest.  Videos were 60-second public service announcements that addressed one of two categories: suicide prevention or eliminating stigma associated to mental illness.  Several of the submissions were from schools in the San Diego Unified School District.  The winners will be announced in a ceremony May 23rd in Sacramento.  Click here for more information.

  • National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)-San Diego's 9th Annual Inspiration Awards Dinner

    The awards dinner is Tuesday, October 16, 2012 (5:30 p.m. Cocktail Hour and Silent Auction; 6:30 p.m. Dinner and Awards Ceremony).  The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina (1441 Quivira Road * San Diego, CA 92109).  The event will honor the Inspirational Person and Organization of the Year, San Diego Police Chief Lansdowne and the San Diego Police Department's commitment to serve San Diego.   • Antidepressants and Suicidal Behavior

    A meta-analysis of clinical trials of several widely usedantidepressants found no evidence that these medications increased the risk ofsuicidal ideation or behavior in children and young adults. This contradicts anearlier analysis by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that led the agencyto require a "black box" warning on antidepressants for this age group.  For more information, please click here

  • Native Cry Outreach Releases New Suicide Prevention PSA

    Native Cry Outreach Alliance is an organization dedicated to suicide prevention within the Native American community.  They have released a new public service announcement (PSA) aimed at Native Americans who are considering taking their own lives. The video features individuals who have lost loved ones to suicide, comments from professionals and educators hoping to reverse the high rates of suicide within Native communities, offers an overall message of support and encourages people to reach out and ask for help.  Click here to view PSA.

  • American Association of Suicidology Invites Nominations for 2013 Survivor of the Year

    The American Association of Suicidology (AAS) recognizes the efforts of one survivor of suicide every year with the National Survivor of the Year Award. A survivor of suicide is an individual who has lost someone to suicide. The 2013 award will be presented at the AAS conference to be held in Austin, TX, on April 27, 2013.   • NFL launches new wellness/suicide prevention initiative

    The NFL launched the NFL Life Line as part of a broader wellness initiative for the entire NFL family. The NFL Life Line is a free, confidential, and independently operated 24- hour crisis counseling service for current and former players, coaches, team and league staff, and their family members. The Action Alliance and SAMHSA are collaborating partners with NFL and are supporting the leadership of the NFL as it specifically included an evidence-based suicide prevention component in its workplace wellness programming.  In doing so, the NFL has taken asignificant step forward in providing these important resources to players, employees, and their family members.   Doing so will helps to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and suicide and also sends a message to people that it is okay to ask for help.
