Good evening, this is Principal Jeff Olivero providing your weekly school update for University City High School. Starting with the morning of Friday, November 4, 2011, the PSTA will sponsor the Principal’s Coffee in the Media Center. The PTSA meeting will start at 7:30 AM, which will be followed by the principal’s school updates.

Please know that at lunch tomorrow, students who purchased and took a portrait picture from Raymond’s Studio, can pick up their pictures at lunch.

You have a couple of options tomorrow night. Some may chose to go the UCHS football game at Mesa College against the Kearny Comets, and some can chose to attend the last showing of the school’s fall theatre production “The Children’s Hour.” Please the see the school’s website for the times for both activities.

On the school’s website, there is information about electing two new parent members to the School’s Site Governance Team. The website provides the names of parents running and how you may submit your election ballot.

If you have not already done so, please have your student turn in their Federal Survey card. They were given out on Tuesday for parents to complete and our hope is that we do not have to spend extra time and effort tracking down missing and incomplete cards. Please get them in or Saturday School for the parents! Ha!

On Saturday, November 5, The UCHS Marching Band and Color Guard will be competing in their last field competition of the year. It will be at Mira Mesa High School and we wish them well! Speaking of band, we have a few students who are trying to win $10,000 dollars from Pepsi for the school’s music program. Please see the school’s main web page for how you can participate and help. It only takes one text a day from you and from all of us to make it happen! We can do this! Yea, clap it up!

Please know that next Friday, November 11, the school will be closed as we celebrate Veterans’ Day. Thank you all and have a great weekend!

Good evening, this is Principal Olivero providing your HOMECOMING update for University City High School.

That’s right! Tomorrow night is the homecoming football game that will be played at Mesa College with a kickoff time of 6:30 PM. The Football Booster Club will be sponsoring a tailgate party before the game; please visit the school’s website for more information.

Tomorrow we will have a pep rally in the gym and students are to wear their designated colored shirt for the occasion. Freshmen are to wear a white shirt. Sophomores are to wear a black shirt! Juniors are to wear a powder blue shirt and seniors are to wear a navy blue shirt! Clap it up! The pep rally should be fun and I look forward to seeing some of the activities planned!

As a UCHS traffic update, please know I have been working on trying to find the best possible solution to the morning drop-off and afternoon pickup for students and parents. Clearly, there are no easy solutions. However, the priority must continue to be student safety. After meeting with 8-9 parents Monday night, it was agreed that the school would try to provide parents the opportunity to drop off their student using both on campus lanes coming up to the school on Centurion Square. To keep this second lane open to traffic, I need extra help on everyone’s part. First, I need for everyone to try to get to school earlier. Second, I need for all cars driving up the two Centurions lanes to drive slowly and carefully. Because we are using both lanes to drop off students, each vehicle needs to proceed with extreme caution. Third, we need all students to pay attention to the cars around them and look before walking. This includes their path up and down the pedestrian walkways. Fourth, I need volunteers to help me with morning and afternoon traffic. You have seen me out there most days, but I can’t be there every morning and I can’t be everywhere. I really need your help. Please consider giving us 20 minutes of support once a week. To do this, please contact Norma Smith to set up a day to assist us. Thank you and please drive carefully!

Our school’s drama department will be showcasing their Fall Production: ‘The Children’s Hour.” Please see the school website for theatre times for next week.

We hope you all have a great weekend and hope to see you at the game! UC U Know!!

Good evening, this is Principal Jeff Olivero providing your weekly school update for University City High School.

Tomorrow progress report grades will be given to students. Please make sure you ask your student for them. If you have questions about your student’s progress, please call or email your student’s teacher.

If you have not already read the reason for the traffic flow changes on campus, please see the school’s website. There will be an evening meeting to address concerns and ideas on Monday, October 24, 2011. The meeting will be held in the media center at 6 PM.

Earlier in the day on Monday, October 24, 2011, all freshmen and sophomore students will attend an assembly in the gym. They will see a Kaiser Permanente Educational Theater Group perform a play called “What Goes Around.” The production raises awareness about abstinence, HIV testing and the epidemic rate of STDs. Any parent not wanting their student to see the production needs to inform an administrator before Monday’s viewing.

On Thursday, October 27, we will have another early-out day for professional development. Students will be released at 12:19 PM.

Well, next week is it! Clap it up! It’s homecoming week at UCHS! There will be two spirited assemblies on Friday, and the football game will be played later that night at Mesa College, at 6:30 PM. We hope everyone comes out as it is always good to see current and returning students and parents. The homecoming dance will be held in the gym Saturday night from 8-11 PM. We hope that everyone there has a good time. But remember kids, none of that crazy dancing!

Last, we wish our band the very best as they compete this weekend in the Poway Invitational Band Tournament. Have a great weekend and get ready for an exciting week at UCHS! Mr. O.

School Site Council elections will take place next week. The voting period will run from Monday, October 17ththrough Monday, October 24th. Ballots will be available in the attendance office or by email request from Heidi Murphy athmurphy@sandi.net. Please return the ballot to Barbara Kylstad in the main office by Monday, October 24 by 3:30PM.

Another opportunity to get involved and stay informed is by being a School Site Governance Team (SSGT) member. If you are interested in having your name put on the ballot, please contact Principal Jeff Olivero atjolivero@sandi.net by October 21, 2011. School Site Governance Team members meet monthly to discuss the school's instructional program, site budget, organizational structures, and student handbook rules.

Parents should know that on Friday, October 21, 2011, first quarter progress report grades will be issued to students. Parents can view their student’s grades on Parent Connect or ask their student for the hard copy given to them at school. Please look over your student’s grades and if your student is behind, please contact your student’s teacher(s) to set up a plan for success.

In two weeks the school will have its homecoming week. In honor of the recent power outage the theme is called “Blackout”! For a student to be eligible for the dance, they must have at least a 2.0 in academic and citizenship. In addition, students must clear all tardies, truancies and uncleared absences. For students to clear an attendance infraction, they must make up the time in detention at lunch, afterschool or at a Saturday School session.

Last, we wish all of our PSAT takers this Saturday the best in skill and knowledge. While it is only a practice for the real college assessments, juniors will be competing for National Merit recognition. Worthwhile scholarships can be gained as a result of this test. Go get’em juniors!

That’s all I have this week. See you at the football game Friday night, at Clairemont, UC U-Know!

Stay Informed andInvolved! (September 30, 2011)

Good evening, this is Principal Olivero providing your weekly school update!

If you have not already heard, the stadium project started this week.  We are very excited about the new grass turffield, rubber track and stadium lights that are due to be constructed in thecoming months.  It is anticipated it willbe completed by late spring.

We are in need of new members for our school sitecouncil.  If you are interested in having your name put on the ballot, please contact Heidi Murphy at hmurphy@sandi.net by October 14, 2011.  School SiteCouncil members meet monthly to maintain the SPSA (Single Plan for StudentAchievement).  They are responsible for making instructional decisions andallocating funds to support classroom achievement.

Looking ahead at the school calendar, there will be acollege night meeting for seniors and their parents on Thursday, October6.  It will be held in the auditorium at6 PM.

On Friday next week, the PTSA will hold their first meetingand principal coffee chat.  The meetingwill be held in the Media Center and start at 7:30 AM, followed by the coffee chat at 8:00 AM.

Next Friday, October 7, will be the last day for students tosign up and pay for the PSAT.  The costis $14.  Students in grades 10 and 11should really consider taking advantage of taking the Saturday test on theOctober 15, 2011, to see how they score. Feedback from the test will allow students to see their areas ofstrengths and weakness.  In turn, theycan better prepare for the actual SAT. Eleventh grade scores will be used to determine National Merithonors.  Last year we had two NationalMerit Semi-Finalists and thirteen National Merit Commended Students.  These distinctions usually mean scholarshipopportunities at various colleges.  Sowhat I am saying to you is, make sure your junior takes the exam.  It counts for scholarship money!  Additionally, make sure your sophomore takesit as well, as they will be better prepared for the competitive PSAT theirjunior year.

Last, we still have around 149 students who have not clearedpaperwork for having their Tdap records submitted to the school.  The deadline is Thursday, October 6,2011.  If the school does not receivethis needed information, the student will not be permitted to attend school onFriday, October 7! Students will not be able to re-enter school until shotrecords are verified.

Have a great Friday and weekend and we look forward toseeing many of you at the college night next Thursday night, and Friday for thecoffee with the principal. UC U-Know!

Stay Informed and Involved! (September 21, 2011)

Good evening, this is Principal Olivero providing your weekly school update, I know, a night early!

Ok, tomorrow is an action packed day at UCHS. In the morning, around 9:40 AM, the school will conduct an emergency evacuation drill. Because of the new construction in the stadium, we need to acquaint everyone to the new route to take and location should we ever need to relocate from the school buildings. We ask that parents not stop by the school from 9:40 to 10:15 AM. Office staff will also be evacuated from the school buildings.

Tomorrow is also an early-out day as students will dismissed at 12:19 PM. The early-out schedule will also be in place for the following Thursday, September 29th.

As you know, our Back-to-School Night is tomorrow. At 5:15 PM, in the auditorium, we will start with an Advanced Studies Meeting for all parents who have students in Advanced, Honors and Advanced Placement classes. This meeting will be followed with a greeting from the principal in the gymnasium at 6 PM. As you know, parking is limited so get to school early and avoid getting your first tardy slip!

Students were given back-to-school notices in classes the last two days to take home to their parent or guardian. I know, what’s the likelihood they gave them to you? If they did, proudly show it off as you walk from class to class. Just kidding! Students were to have given them to you because they were supposed to have copied down their class schedule so that you would know what classes to attend tomorrow night. I will leave this conversation up to you, but I would ask them if they have something for you! Class visits start at 6:15 PM. Again, don’t be late!

Please check the school website if your student takes a bus in the morning because we will have bus transportation for parents for back-to-school night. The schedule of stops is posted on the school’s website.

Again, I expect to see you all here Tomorrow night! Your student may say to you not to go or hide their schedule, but secretly, they do care if you do go! I personally think it’s important to meet and greet the adults partnering with you during the daytime hours. Please look for me, I’ll be the guy clapping it up and thanking you for coming!

Please know the college night next Thursday night has been changed to the following Thursday night. It will be Thursday night, October 6, and will be for senior parents.

Last, students, especially juniors, are encouraged to sign up for the PSAT being offered on campus Saturday, October 15, 2011. The cost is $14 dollars, and the deadline for paying for the test is Friday, October 7, 2011.

I know, this was a long update, but please check the school website for continued school announcements! I will see you all here tomorrow night. I am counting on you! Yea, UC U-Know!

Stay Informed and Involved! (September 15, 2011)

Good evening, this is Principal Olivero providing your weekly school update for University City High School.

If you have not already heard, the school received great news! Last year’s state achievement scores are in from the California Department of Education and the results indicate the school advanced its Academic Performance Index (API) score by 14 points. Even more impressive, the schools Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) results from the state showed the school hit 22 out of 22 growth targets set by the state.  This is not an easy accomplishment and for two years in a row the school has shown academic growth as measured by the state and federal government.

Over the last several days, some students have been switching classes and teachers. We are still in the process of balancing classes to support students and teachers. We ask for everyone’s patience as we work our way through this annual process.

On Tuesday, next week, the school will hold its Club Rush day at lunch. This is an opportunity for students to sign-up to be in a club and get involved. Please encourage your student to find a club or two that interests them and join! We have over fifty clubs on campus. Not only do colleges like to see potential students involved in extracurricular activities, research also shows that involved students earn higher grades. Joining a club usually means they meet new friends and they have a greater connection to school.

Last, mark your calendar as next Thursday night will be our Back-to-School Night! The Back-To-School Night will start at 6:00 pm in the gym, with an earlier meeting for Advanced Studies parents whose children are enrolled in Advanced, Honors and Advanced Placement courses starting at 5:15 in the auditorium. I expect to see you all here Thursday night! Your student may say to you that you do not have to go, but secretly, to them, they do care if you do go! I personally think it’s important to meet and greet the adults partnering with you during the daytime hours. Again, I expect to see you all there! Yea, clap it up! I see you on Thursday night for sure! Right? Have a great weekend, Mr. Olivero.

School Update (Stay Informed and Involved) Sept. 8, 2011

Dear students and parents of UCHS, we are excited about the start of the new school year.  As your student can attest, some of our classes are crowded.  Each year students move in and move out of the area, and it makes it difficult to balance class size at the start of the school year.  In order to balance classes, we will have to move some students to other classes.  This will require closing counseling services on certain days next week. We ask for everyone’s patience during this time as we seek to adjust our course offerings for students, and at the same time, stay within our budget constraints.

Congratulations are in order to all UCHS students, staff and parents.  Last year’s state achievement scores are in from the California Department of Education, and the results indicate the school advanced its Academic Performance Index (API) score from 796 to 811.  This represents a gain of 14 points.  Even more impressive, UCHS’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) results from the state showed that the school hit 22 out of 22 growth targets set by the state.  This is not an easy accomplishment and for two years in a row the school has demonstrated academic growth.

As we progress through the month of September, please be reminded that Thursday, September 22, will be a shortened day for students.  Students will complete their 6th period day at 12:20 pm.  It will also be our Back-to-School Night.

We are excited about getting the new school year started!  Already our athletic teams are doing well.  All are invited to attend the school’s first “Home” football game that will be played at La Jolla High School tomorrow night.  Visitors will get to see our undefeated football team, cheer squad, dance team, and our newly led Band and Color Guard perform at halftime. We ask everyone come and support all extra-curricular activities at school.  Great school spirit makes school fun!
