Administrative leadership for the San Diego Unified School District is provided by the Superintendent of Schools. The Superintendent is appointed by the Board of Education and is responsible for the overall administrative and educational management of the district.
On June 29, 2010, the Board of Education appointed Bill Kowba as new superintendent of the San Diego Unified School District. Prior to his appointment, Kowba had served as interim superintendent for the district since September 2009. In this capacity, he leads the second largest school district in California with an enrollment of over 130,000 students and work force of over 14,000. In the past 6 years, he has filled several senior executive positions at SDUSD including twice as the Interim Superintendent, Chief Special Projects Officer, Chief Logistics Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Interim Chief Administrative Officer. At various times, he has managed the district’s central office and campus academic programs, $2B operating funds, $2.1B Prop S construction bond, and all business functions.
Prior to joining the team at the San Diego Unified School District, he was a career Navy Supply Corps Officer, retiring at the rank of Rear Admiral. Across his extensive military service, he served in ever increasingly responsible leadership positions in the supply chain/logistics and financial management fields. His assignments included three shipboard tours, two Navy Pentagon details, and numerous field activity experiences. Most recently, he was the first commander of the Fleet and Industrial Supply Centers. As such, he developed a global network of seven supply centers operating at over 100 sites and staffed by almost 7000 logistics, acquisition, and financial professionals.| Special Messages to the Community |
