San Diego Unified School District 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey Results

  • 13.3% of SDUSD students reported having seriously considered suicide.  This represents 5,379 students. 
  • 25.6% of students felt so sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks or more that they stopped doing some usual activities during the past 12 months.  This represents more than 10,353 students in San Diego Unified School District.
     
  • 7.9% of girls and 5.9% of boys report being forced to have sexual intercourse when they didn’t want to.  This represents more than 3,195 girls and 2,386 boys in San Diego Unified School District.
     
  • 9.1% of students actually attempted suicide one or more times during the past 12 months.  This represents 3,680 students.  
     
  • 6.1% of high school students felt too unsafe to go to school in the past 30 days; 2467 high school students.                                                                                                                 
  • 10.8% of high school students report being harassed because someone thought they were gay, lesbian, or bisexual in the past 12 months.  This represents 4,368 students. 

 National Statistics                                                    

  • 31.1% of college students reported that on at least one occasion in the last year, they felt so depressed it was difficult to function, and 6.4% had ''seriously considered suicide'' in the previous year (American College Health Association, 2011).

  • Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender, and Questioning youth are 4 times more likely to attempt suicide because of the way they are treated (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2007; Maryland Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2006).

  • LBGT youth who report higher levels of family rejection related to their sexuality are nearly 9 times (11 times for Latinos) to report having attempted suicide (Journal of Pediatrics Ryan C., 2009).

  • In 2009 there were 4,636 completed suicides for youth age 24 and under (American Association of Suicidology). 

  • In 2009, an average of 1 young person kills themselves every 1 hour and 53 minutes (American Association of Suicidology).  
  • Each day, there are approximately 12 youth suicides (American Association of Suicidology, 2009).

  • In 2009, 265 children under age 15 completed suicide (American Association of Suicidology).

  • It is estimated that there are more than 1,350 suicides on college campuses per year (Center for Disease Control and Prevention).
