Overview
The federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires all states, school districts and schools to demonstrate Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). The goal is to ensure that all students in all schools are at or above the proficiency level in reading/language arts and mathematics by the 2013-14 school year. All schools and districts in the state receive annual AYP determinations.
Under AYP criteria adopted by the State Board of Education, all California school districts, schools, and numerically significant student subgroups within districts and schools must meet or exceed criteria annually in the following four areas:
- Percent proficient on Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs) in English/language arts and mathematics.
- Student testing participation rate of at least 95%.
- Academic Performance Index (API).
- High school graduation rate.
